You don’t necessarily have to be a scientist to work in the biosciences. Or even have an explicit interest in the field. Maybe marketing is your area of expertise. Or perhaps you’re interested in the tech side of things. Whatever your career interest, you can find something within bioscience that relates.

Take it from Ramesh Koukuntla, Head of Process Development at Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies. In this final episode of season two of Science in the Mall Y’all, Ramesh talks about the range of paths someone could explore while working at Fujifilm Diosynth.

And the opportunities are growing constantly. In fact, since COVID, Fujifilm Diosynth has doubled their staff and is on track for continued growth. That’s because they’re in the business of manufacturing vaccines and gene therapies for various companies. And it goes without saying that because of COVID and the development and production of vaccine treatments, the market for services like Fujifilm Diosynth’s is exploding.

There are more and more career opportunities everyday for people who want to get into biosciences, and Ramesh digs into this growing job market, and what students can do to prepare themselves for it.

As the Head of Process Development, Ramesh is directly involved in the hiring process, and he describes Fujifilm Diosynth’s philosophy when it comes to candidates and hiring. When they’re filling entry-level positions, there is a general set of skills, experience, and education that they’re looking for. Though they don’t rely solely on a punch list of specific qualifications. They also consider personality and character traits, stressing that people with varied educational backgrounds should apply for relevant positions because as long as the foundations are there, hirees can be trained in the specifics of their position.

And as Ramesh said, at Fujifilm Diosynth there are a lot of positions to choose from, and the number is growing all the time. They handle all stages of the vaccine and gene therapy production process from production to purification to testing and the many steps that fall between.

Like any bioscience company, the work at Fujifilm Diosynth is fast-paced, and requires adaptability and a willingness to learn and grow on the part of employees. Because of that, Ramesh advises students looking to get into the field to get as much hands-on experience as they can through programs like ACC’s Bioscience Incubator. Experience in state of the art labs such as ABI’s prepare students for the kind of adaptability, precision, and problem-solving necessary once they enter the job-force.

Listen to the full episode to learn more about the work they’re doing at Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, how they source talent from programs like ACC’s Bioscience Incubator, and how ABI provides the kind of learning and experiential foundations upon which to build a fulfilling career in the biosciences. .
