What you’ll hear in this episode:
- The ins and outs of working for a bioscience start-up company
- What it was like to transition from an internship to working for a diagnostics company during COVID
- A day in the life of working at Nuclein
Angstrom and Nuclein are both Austin-based diagnostics and testing companies, and during the course of the pandemic, they’ve both shifted their focus to working on COVID tests.
Like most of Science in the Mall, Y’all guests, Nuclein got started using the ACC Bioscience Incubator’s lab. But they have since outgrown the space and have moved on to larger facilities, enabling them to up production. This keeps them on track for their goal of creating disposable, all-in-one, self-tests for infectious disease diagnosis.
In this episode, former ABI intern Liz Hampton returns to the show, and she’s brought a colleague along. Barrett Morrow was Nuclein’s first hire, and he gets into the nitty gritty of that experience — from the thorough interview process to get hired, to how he fought off the gremlins of self-doubt as a novice entering the field of biosciences.
As Nuclein’s growth has exploded, Barrett has grown right along with it. While he started out as a nervous applicant, Barrett now finds himself doing the hiring, and he gets into some of the things that he and Nuclein look for in candidates during the interview process.
Liz, a more recent addition to the Nuclein team, describes what her experience has been like, in the midst of a global pandemic, going from her internship at ABI to working for a company doing their part in the fight against COVID.
From a start-up to a thriving diagnostics company, the work environment at Nuclein has changed a lot since their days at the ABI wet-lab. And the team has had to adapt every step of the way. There are both joys and pains of helping a start-up scale, and Barrett and Liz get into their roles, and how they’ve changed along the way.

This is part one of a two part conversation, so stay tuned for part two, where Liz and Barrett get into the interview process, highlighting qualities beyond your resume, and what it’s really like to work at Nuclein.
