What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • Demystifying the day-to-day of a clinical laboratory scientist’s role
  • The varied and unique path to discovering passion for and embarking on careers in the biosciences
  • The importance of a growth mindset and how a willingness to get outside your comfort zone can lead you unexpected places
  • Advice on taking advantages of all the resources at your disposal

The field of biosciences is constantly evolving and changing, which means that those who work in the field must be passionate about continual learning. A genuine passion for bioscience is not only important for keeping up with the latest discoveries and innovations, but it also helps to drive one’s own personal career development.

While formal education is a necessary component, another important factor is having the right mindset. A growth mindset is essential for bioscientists who want to be successful in their field. This means having a humble attitude and always being open to learning new things.

This is something which both Mauricio Tellez and Marcia McCallum have in huge supply. It was their passion for both science and learning that helped get them from their internships at ACC’s Bioscience Incubator to where they are today.

If you remember back to part one of this conversation, you’ll recall that Marcia works as a Senior Lead in Upstream Processing at XBiotech. But we didn’t get into Mauricio’s work as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist.

In this episode, we dig into Mauricio’s work screening patients to identify if they may have leukemia lymphoma, monitoring HIV in patients, and helping to detect mutations in patients’ hemoglobin. The role Mauricio plays in the lab helps doctors in medical settings make informed decisions about how to care for and treat their patients. Decisions which could mean the difference between life and death.

Whether at ACC, Texas State University, or other institutions of learning, higher education can lead to many exciting career opportunities, especially in the field of biosciences. Bioscience is a rapidly growing field with new innovations and discoveries being made every day.

Those who, like Marcia and Mauricio, have a genuine passion for bioscience and a desire to learn can find themselves at the leading edge of this exciting field. This passion not only drives you to stay abreast of the newest innovations in bioscience, but it is also what pushes you to develop yourself, both professionally and personally.

And for those that want to grow, opportunities abound. Whether through programs like ACC’s Bioscience Incubator, or in unexpected career paths that present themselves, it’s important to make the most of what opportunities come your way. You never know which one will end up being a turning point in your career.

If you missed part one of Marcia and Mauricio’s conversation, give it a listen. Then, tune into part two where they get into being open to opportunities, the importance of discovering (and following) your passion, and how a growth mindset can make all the difference in your career.
